What We Do
The National Federation of Public Benefit Organizations (PBOs) – Kenya works to strengthen the public benefit and civil society sector through leadership, self-regulation, advocacy, capacity strengthening, and coordinated action.
Guided by Section 21 of the Public Benefit Organizations Act, 2013, our work supports registered PBOs, NGOs, and CSOs to operate effectively, lawfully, and sustainably while contributing to Kenya’s socio-economic development.
1. Self-Regulation & Compliance
We promote high standards of governance, transparency, and accountability within the PBO sector by supporting self-regulation frameworks and compliance with the PBO Act, regulations, and codes of conduct.
Focus areas include:
Coordination of self-regulation forums
Promotion of ethical standards and good governance
Compliance sensitization and guidance
Monitoring performance of self-regulation mechanisms
2.Policy Advocacy & Representation
The Federation represents the collective voice of PBOs in policy dialogue and decision-making spaces at national, county, regional, and international levels.
Our advocacy work includes:
Engagement with government and regulatory bodies
Policy and legislative advocacy
Protection of civic space and freedom of association
Representation of member interests to donors and stakeholders
3.Capacity Building & Institutional Strengthening
We support PBOs to realize their full potential by strengthening their institutional, operational, and leadership capacities.
This includes:
Training and sensitization on governance and compliance
Organizational development and strategic planning
Leadership development and mentorship
Technical support for sustainability and effectiveness
4. Coordination, Networking & Partnerships
The Federation facilitates collaboration and collective action among PBOs and stakeholders through national, regional, county, and thematic networks.
Key activities include:
Coordinating regional and county PBO networks
Convening forums, conferences, and stakeholder engagements
Promoting knowledge sharing and peer learning
Building partnerships with government, donors, academia, and civil society
5.Peacebuilding & Civic Engagement
We promote peace, social cohesion, and democratic participation by supporting peacebuilding initiatives and civic engagement across Kenya.
